So we’re getting close to the end of November and the Christmas parties have already started! Gaaaa! You look into your wardrobe at your glitzy pieces from last year. What’s your go to? Are you a sequin lover or stay safe in black?
I’ve put together some of my picks from the high street along with some of my top tips on how I’d style them…
Party with Sequins
Ok so sequins always seem to be the go to party season look. Sequin dresses, tops, trousers, blazers…. But do you buy a new piece each year? I have one piece that I’ve had for a few years now and wear at some point each party season. In an old post from Fashion Revolution they reported that: ‘This holiday season, British women will purchase 33 million sequined garments and accessories at a cost of £415 million. And after the party’s over? “The research, of 2,000 women aged 18-55 years, found that half of the respondents leave the items to languish at the back of their wardrobe.”
Now I’m not the hugest fan of sequins as they can sometimes look a little tacky, if not sewn well can fall off and often don’t give the best shape. They can also itch and be uncomfortable on a not so well made garment.
But if you are mad for sequins, what can you do to reduce your impact… Well first and foremost, rewear your items!! Too many of us feel the need to buy a new piece each year. And if you don’t want to rewear it, sell it on and buy a preloved item. Or share the love with friends and family so you can all get a new look. Think before you buy!
And if you go for a sequinned option my top tips for a more classic and elegant look. Don’t do full sequins. Opt for a plain top or bottom to let the sequins do the talking. Wear the sequins on the area of your body that you want to accentuate. So for example, if you are a strawberry and need to balance out your lower half, then try a skirt or pair of trousers to draw attention away from broader shoulders. Think about your colour combinations too and remember how sequins will reflect the light.
The Classic LBD or All Over Black
You can’t go wrong with the LBD or an all over black outfit. It can be worn all year round so you can be sure to get a lot of use out of it. Keep it classic with black throughout and a pop of colour in your make up or accessories. Or go for textures to add detail and interest. Try furs, applique, sheer fabrics and velvet etc to give it a new look each time. I love the knot detail on this dress from Maje and the fact it’s satin to give an elegant drape.
Party in Metallic
Instead of sequins why not try a metallic fabric. Bronze is my favourite at the moment and can really make a statement. The warmth in bronze will complement those neutral skin tones and give it a glow! For an all out statement pair with metallics in your jewellery, shoes and bag.
For those cooler skin tones this Silver metallic skirt playsuit from HM will definitely make a statement. Pair with pink for a dramatic look.
Colour Party
And finally… don’t forget to play with colours! Just because its winter doesn’t mean you can’t go for a colourful outfit and you’ll be sure to brighten up and turn heads at the party! Try vibrant brights or more subdued cool winter shades. Let the colour do the talking and pair back with neutral accessories or for something more exaggerated a printed clutch or block colour shoes in a complementary or contrasting colour will make you the life of the party!
