What Spring means for me…

Any guesses as to what my favourite season is? This week I’m attempting a bit of a different style of post as I’ve been embracing the turn of the season into Spring. Moving from dark and cold days into lighter and brighter ones feels pretty poignant for my phase in both my personal and professional life. And yes I may be a Personal Stylist but my world covers so much more from Creative Consultancy to me as a wife, daughter, sister, friend and Masi (aunty).

I was speaking to a friend the other day and we were sharing how wiped out we felt after losing an hour of sleep due to the British Daylight Saving, literally springing us forward into Spring. But we both shared the same sentiment that Spring is where we almost come alive. And she raised such a good point that our western new year system seems so out of touch with the natural flow of life. Spring is the time when things come into bloom, where you have those brighter days and so much more feels possible and where your seeds of intention start to grow and become a reality.

And it got me thinking about so many parts of life, from fashion to significant cultural events and why Spring is such an important time of the year. And so today I’m sharing some of my musings as I explore this further.

Spring

Fashion & Style

Spring has to be one of my favourite times for fashion and style. The shops will be in undated with the latest trends and I don’t really advocate for being trend led in your style but it can help in giving your more inspiration and excitement about your wardrobe.

When it come to my personal style, Spring for me means lighter layers, hopefully being able to ditch the heavy coats, boots and hoods, although an umbrella in the UK is a non-negotiable. I feel like people come out of their shell with style, being more excited to experiment, play and explore their wardrobes, not having to hide behind heavy and overwhelming fabrics.

In the autumn and winter months people seem called to make everything a bit dark and grey and gloomy. Much like you have Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAM) where people’s mood is often affected in the darker winter months, I see this reflected in the wardrobe too. Especially in the west because in the darker months we rarely see those pops of brighter colours.

So Spring is a welcome arrival after what feels like months of darkness.

Culture

Looking to cultural events from my ancestral roots of India, many celebrate the Hindu festival of Holi, otherwise known as the festival of colours to welcome in the Spring. With Holi it really is a time for fun and celebration, for encouraging equality, showering love and colour amongst your peers and also marking the triumph of good over evil. Obviously for me I love that it is such a colourful celebration but also the fact that it comes at a turning point as we move into brighter days.

I’ve started to learn more about the traditions from my eastern culture and how they work so closely with the movements of our planetary system.

Astrology

As I’ve been learning more about astrology (mainly from the Queen of astrology Kirsty Gallagher) the start of the astrological new year also begins during the time of Holi and the Spring Equinox which marks the beginning of Spring and lighter days. But in the west we celebrate our new year during the dark time of winter. At this time it almost feels like we are in hibernation, not ready to come out and achieve all of these goals. So maybe Spring really should be the start of our year.

Over the winter period I found myself in this level of deep inwardness, gathering myself, working on plans that I wasn’t ready to reveal and connecting to parts of myself that needed some attention. I have to admit its left me feeling a little tired. But I’ve promised myself time for rest, so that I can leap into Spring with more energy.

Food

And I couldn’t help but talk about food. What I love with the turn of Spring is moving to lighter and fresher meals, more salads, raw foods and that lighter feeling in the body. Whereas in the Autumn and Winter all I want to do is eat warm and heavy foods which often leave me feeling heavy and sluggish.

Spring really does feel like this poignant time of new beginnings and rejuvenation in everything from your wardrobe to your goals and intentions.

And the first place I’m starting with is my wardrobe. Doing a wardrobe declutter, bringing out those warmer weather pieces that bring me so much joy and swapping those heavy layers for light and breathable layers feels like the perfect place to begin.

So I wanted to ask you, which season is your favourite and why?

I would love to know what you think on my take of Spring. And if you are in that phase of needing a wardrobe declutter then ask no more. Feel free to book in for your Free Style Call and lets chat!

Love,
