Slow.. not a term you hear much really in the fashion world. Everything feels like it is moving at a million miles an hour. But what if we were to take things slower and have a more intentional path in everything from our personal style, to our very own sense of identity and belonging. Where each decision is considered, rather than forced, made with intention rather than pressure. Where you begin to listen deeper to your gut rather than the chaotic mind or the endless noise in the media.
For this month’s Style Story I wanted to explore the idea of a slow journey through your personal style and some of the things I have been learning along the way. It might be a little jumble of thoughts but I would love to know what you think and if you feel the same.
Do you really like it?
Have you ever done something just because someone else was? It could be wearing a certain item of clothing or maybe what you are consuming from food, drinks or media. Often I feel like there is so much pressure to conform. To be like others, that we end up losing our own uniqueness and within this our own choices.
What do you really like when it comes to your personal style? What shapes or silhouettes stand out to you, do you like sleek and tailored looks, maybe floaty and romantic styles or even exaggerated shapes that catch the eye.
Over the last few years I’ve been thinking about what I really like and dislike and why. Listening to my inner guidance to make decisions makes them feel more real and authentic to me. But in the fashion landscape it can feel like you need to do what everyone else is doing. And that inner voice can often be drowned out.
The same comes to your dislikes too. Have you ever disliked something and yet felt the pressure to do it. Giving in to peer pressure or ‘what would they say’ if you didn’t.

Slow & Considered
I totally love the idea of going with your gut and listening to your instincts. But sometimes what we feel is our instinct or gut might actually be the ego seeking validation through things like impulse buys or quick forms of euphoria.
I’m not by any means saying I am perfect at this. I still impulse buy and have those moments where I haven’t properly considered a purchase or another action. Over the last few months and years I’ve become more aware of where I’ve made choices that weren’t always in line with where I wanted to be.
But taking time to consider these actions, going back to my likes and dislikes has been an interesting approach to so many decisions in my life.
When it comes to my wardrobe my considerations aren’t around conformity anymore, but rather looking for things that reflect who I am and show a glimpse into my personality, without me having to say a word.
Rituals & Reflection
Within the process of going slow, rituals have become a huge part of my approach. Seeing getting dressed as an exciting part of the day, a place to be creative before the day has even begun, an act of self care when you might need it most.
And watching the reflection as it unfolds . It could be the reflection in your clothing of how you are feeling or how you want to feel in the day – maybe happy, productive or sociable. Or simply the reflection you see in the mirror and how that makes you feel.
I have a beautiful morning ritual that includes mediation, journalling and breath work, plus how I get dressed with intention. It’s a way to bring a slow and considered approach to our wardrobes and personal style.

I know there is so much talk about sustainable style and moving towards a slower approach to fashion. But I think there are more deeper ways in which we can achieve this. I had a beautiful conversation with Ingrid Lung on her podcast Shades of Life, where we talked about Sustainability from the angle of Personal Style. It really go me thinking about this topic more. You can catch the episode here.
So sorry if this has been a sporadic jumble of thoughts and ideas but I’d rather keep it raw, honest and real!
