Which do you prefer, gold or silver jewellery? Typically we tend to have a preference for one over the other, although the latest trends tend to dictate what we are drawn to. Metals, similar to the colours from the colour wheel, also impact our reflection when worn close to the face. Gold tends to suit those with a warmer skin tone while silver suits those with a cooler skin tone.
Traditions
During another doom scroll on IG the other day I came across a post by Sandy Chana on a tradition she experienced when growing up in India. Below is her explanation of her experience.
When girls were younger they would tend to wear silver jewellery and then when they reached the age of marriage they would change to gold jewellery. The tradition had nothing to do with individual style but a deeper meaning around how the different metals can affect our energy.
Silver is connected to the moon symbolising feminine energy, emotions and intuition. By girls wearing silver it helps them to stay grounded, calm and connected to their inner selves. It soothes and balances their emotions making it perfect during their younger years.
Gold on the other hand is linked to the sun, representing strength and vitality. As women move into adulthood and get closer to marriage they step into their full potential. Their confidence increases along with their mental clarity and strength.
They move from the soft and introspective energy of silver into the bold, empowering energy of gold.
So these traditions go beyond fashion and encourage consideration for the energy of each metal. Silver is nurturing and helps to balance emotions and gold helps you to shine and step into your power.
This acts as the perfect reminder that the journey is both through the inner and the outer world and the metals we wear reflect this transformation.
Within the South Asian culture, metals, particularly gold, are seen as symbols of status and wealth but also as an investment for the future.
But taking into account the energy of a piece rather than its material value gives so much more of a greater meaning to the pieces you choose to wear.

Balance
I took some time to reflect over Sandy’s words and the learnings I have had through the countless yoga sessions I have been to. We are always taught that the left side of the body is represented by the moon which reflects the feminine energy which is linked to introspection, coolness and calmness.
The right side of the body on the other hand is represented by the sun and reflects masculine energy. It is often linked to being active, heat and energy. When we worked through the body in varying yoga poses we would always be looking to create balance.
And I guess that’s exactly how we can use the energy of metals in our day to day life.
Intuition
The metals you choose therefore go far beyond the aesthetic but maybe more of an intuitive feeling as to what stage of life you are at or even how you feel that day.
So, could you start to use the metals you wear from a place of intuition seeing what energy you need to tap into or what vibe you are looking to create that day?
Potentially seeing gold as something to wear when you are in an active phase in life where you need more drive and motivation to pursue your dreams. Leaning towards silver when you need to slow down and restore balance.
What a special way of seeing the pieces you choose to wear.
I wear a mix and match of metals but gold tends to be my preference now. But with this knowledge maybe I’ll be more reflective on the pieces I choose to wear.
Can I invite you to do the same?

The metals work hand in hand with Colour Analysis but if you feel drawn to a metal that is the opposite to your skin tone, just remember that there are ways you can counteract this, like not wearing it too close to the face of wearing an item of clothing that is more suited to your undertone. There is always a way!
