Style Stories: With Milan

Style Stories capture the experiences of previous clients where they share with me their own journey with their personal style and the impact that working with me at Neelam Personal Stylist has had on them. This may include a one to one styling client, a group event or maybe a brand partnership. Real life experiences allow you to really understand the impact of working with a personal stylist and how it could work for you too.

Style Stories with Milan

This month I spoke with Milan Hansjee, a Personal Trainer based in Derby who I connected with through a friend. We first worked together in the summer of 2023.  In our first session we worked on the foundational elements to Milan’s style. We got to know her body shape, the colours that suit her the best and her dramatic style personality! I love her approach of ‘More is more!’ By learning these foundations Milan slowly became more confident in her purchases and how to dress for her body.

After some time of playing with her foundations Milan wanted to work together at the end of 2024 on a Wardrobe Restyle. She reflected that ‘I didn’t know how to put outfits together. It was all very one dimensional and didn’t really know how to layer or add pieces to an existing outfit’. A problem that a lot of clients often have – a wardrobe of clothes but no idea of where to begin to create new and exciting outfits. It can leave you feeling like you need to keep buying more and more to make it come together. But the real trick is to learn how to shop your own wardrobe first.

During a session like this we go through your wardrobe to find formulas of how to pair items together in ways you might not have thought of. We document the outfits through pictures which you can then use as your guide when choosing your next look or when coming up with new combinations.

For Milan she had three main focus areas on the outfits she wanted to create.

1. Colour Blocking

Milan shared how colour massively shapes her style. ‘I love colour. ‘The brighter the better. Colour uplifts my mood!’. But often when we have lots of different colours in our wardrobe it can be difficult to know how to pair pieces together. Through the session we created combinations such as monochrome looks, contrasting looks and also triadic schemes which included at least three colours in one look. We found so many combinations of how colours could be used in different ways.

As Milan is petite, colour blocking and especially monochrome colour palettes are super useful to add length to her body.

2. Mixing Print & Pattern

The second part that Milan really wanted to work on was how to mix prints and patterns together, especially as a huge lover of leopard print. It can sometimes feel overwhelming to clash prints but they can make for the most interesting looks!

We created some simple ways and systems of how to clash prints together so that she can replicate it for herself in the future. We considered colours, directions, sizes and types of prints and patterns to help add cohesion and make it a less overwhelming process.

3. Fusion Styling

As a British South Asian Milan was really keen on fusing her eastern wardrobe with her western wardrobe which was so fun to do. We combined things like colours, prints and patterns, but then also thought about details like embroidery, accessories and footwear to bring looks together.

Having caught up with Milan recently she was glowing in her vibrant colours, patterns and nods to her eastern roots! She shared how ‘I feel a lot more confident building outfits and putting them together. I enjoy the process of getting dressed now and get excited to try out different styles.’

‘I decided to do the wardrobe restyle with Neelam after we worked together and did a body shape analysis. I would have to say this was such a fun and eye opening experience for me! Neelam goes through items in your wardrobe and shows you different ways of styling it making you get more wears out of one piece of clothing. I was amazed at how many different ways you could just style 1 item. She really has inspired me to look at my wardrobe differently and I will definitely be shopping my own wardrobe and trying to create styles that she has shown me.’
